Have your hair extensions gone brassy? Here's why and how to fix your discoloured hair Extensions

There are a few factors that can contribute to discoloration/fading and damage to your extensions.

Such as, hard water / mineral content, chlorine and salt water. Sunscreen and UV rays, using too much heat or not enough heat protection.

Also there are certain shampoos and sun tan lotions that contain ingredients that can turn your hair a pinky or orange colour too. So be careful to make sure you are using the right Products for your hair extensions,

As the hair is no longer attached the scalp, they no longer receive any natural nutrients that act as a protective barrier. Making extensions more prone to damage and discolouration than your hair would be, so the porosity is why hair extensions can turn a peachy shade much quicker than your hair.

Most of our hair is sourced from Indian, Russia and Mongolia and typically is much darker when originally sourced. The hair goes through a lot of processing and lifting to get it lighter and in the shades that we require to match our hair.

To correct the discolouration, just like when blonde hair begins to turn brassy between washes, you will need to reintroduce the violet and ash pigments that have been washed away. A silver shampoo is a great way to do this, or a toner. Be sure to get help from a professional if you need it as hair extensions can be more porous than natural hair, so the pigment grabs quicker and results can be uneven or not the colour you hoped for,

I also like to use the Malibu C treatments, Hard Water Hair Remedy’ if its due to the hard water or minerals in your water.

So feel free to breathe a sign of relief in knowing your hair extensions are not faulty, and that you are not alone in having discoloured hair extensions.
